How CarPlay gets locked at the factory
From approximately 2016–2017 onwards, a growing number of vehicles across multiple manufacturers — including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, and others — were built with the hardware required to run Apple CarPlay already installed. The USB interface, infotainment processing capability, and software framework are present from the production line. CarPlay exists inside the system but sits disabled in the vehicle’s coding profile.
The reason is commercial: manufacturers and dealer networks have used software lockouts to sell CarPlay as a paid activation, a subscription feature, or a dealer-only option — despite the hardware being standard fit. The result is that thousands of owners are driving cars that are physically capable of running CarPlay but cannot access it without paying dealer fees or returning to a workshop.
What we do
We connect to your vehicle’s OBD port, read the current module configuration, and enable CarPlay in the relevant infotainment and communications module coding. No hardware is touched. No parts are fitted. The activation is written directly into the module and persists through normal vehicle use, battery resets, and routine software updates.
Compatible vehicles
CarPlay activation through coding works across a wide range of makes and models, including BMW (iDrive 6.0 and select iDrive 7.0), Mercedes-Benz (MBUX and NTG5/NTG6 systems), Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda (MIB2 and MIB3 platforms), and select models from other manufacturers. Eligibility depends on the specific head unit and software version fitted to your car rather than the badge on the bonnet.
