Gearbox TCU Cloning Service

VIN pairing, adaptive shift data and calibration transferred to your replacement TCU.

Why gearbox cloning is necessary

Modern automatic gearboxes use a dedicated transmission control unit (TCU) that is paired to the vehicle’s VIN and calibrated to the specific gearbox unit it controls. The TCU stores adaptive shift data built up over the life of the gearbox — learned clutch pack pressures, shift timing adjustments, torque converter lock-up thresholds.

When a gearbox is replaced, the replacement unit comes with a blank or foreign-paired TCU. Without intervention, the new unit will not communicate correctly with the rest of the vehicle’s network — leading to fault codes, incorrect shift behaviour, or in some cases refusal to select drive.

What cloning does

We read the complete data image from your original TCU — including VIN pairing, calibration data, and adaptive shift tables. That image is then written to the replacement TCU, which is now matched to your vehicle and gearbox. The vehicle’s other modules (engine ECU, ABS, instrument cluster) recognise the correct VIN in the transmission module and communication proceeds normally.

This applies to ZF 6HP and 8HP automatic gearboxes (common across BMW, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Bentley platforms), Aisin-sourced units on Toyota and Lexus applications, and a range of other OEM automatic transmission controllers. If you are unsure whether your gearbox is cloneable before replacement, contact us with the make, model, and year.

Cloning is completed on-site. We confirm correct CAN bus communication between the cloned TCU and the engine ECU before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cloning copies the entire software image from your old TCU to the new one, making it a direct 'plug and play' replacement.

Usually, we just need the original and replacement TCU units. However, bringing the car allows us to test the replacement fully.

Most TCU cloning jobs are completed within 1-2 hours. The process involves reading the data from your original unit, transferring it to the replacement, and verifying the clone.

We can clone TCUs for automatic, DSG, CVT, and semi-automatic gearboxes across most makes including BMW, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Ford, Land Rover, and many more. Contact us with your vehicle details for confirmation.

Yes. Because the clone is an exact copy of the original software and calibration data, the replacement TCU will function identically — including shift patterns, adaptation values, and communication with the ECU.

In some cases, we can still recover data from a non-functional TCU using specialist equipment. If recovery isn't possible, we may be able to programme a replacement unit using alternative methods. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

Significantly, yes. Main dealer TCU replacement often involves ordering a brand-new unit and lengthy programming procedures. Our cloning service allows you to use a more affordable used replacement unit with a quick turnaround.
